I brought my newly purchased 2001 volvo cross country wagon
to my local 'volvo doctor' mechanic with a problem today.
last night the car, first time this happened, tranmission service urgent
lite went on (as did ! and engine light)...the tranny wouldnt go into
gear.I got home and the next morning it went into reverse fine,
I drove about a mile to the docs garage..he proceeded to check for
codes..and nothing major..he checked the tranny fluid..clean, not too
hot, seemed ok..next cleared some codes..but the gear shifter wouldnt
put the car into gear..just seemed to stay in nuetral......we opened the
hood and he saw and pushed something underside engine..it moved
the gear stick...
I am stuck with 2 options..
is this a MAJOR tranny problem..or possibly a gear shift ratio problem.,,
HELP!!

It's a 2001, you need a new (or rebuilt) transmission... most fail.
You should do some research on 2001 Volvos

thanks for your reply(ies)
im really feeling stuck with this one!:(
how about rebuild/new costs with labor..any ballpark fiqures
there is a local dealer in my area (upper valley vt/nh) that I
dont want to use, but an excellent volvo garage nearby who
can do the total job for about $3500 installed/parts and labor
plus do the code removal! this about accurate?

Probably not, they cost more.
The going rate is more like 4200-4500
I can have it done here (PA) for about that, $3200-3500, but you would have to get it down here and leave it for a week or so

thanks all for your responses..
i just have trouble understanding when there
seems to be no mechanical breakdown..the shifting is fine one
day, i took trips, got great mileage, checked all my fluids, including
the tranny fluid..not easy, but i found and did that and it was full,
no smell, no dirt, clean...the oil, the same..
seems if this is an engineering or software problem volvo should
have recalled these transmissions.
could be dangerous going down the road, suddenly the trans does
not work!:)
wow!!

ok guys/gals..i need to work fast here
the mechanical/service guy at my local volvo dealer
has NOT uploaded any software upgrades at this time
nor has he done a flush/clean and refill....
he just said that would be a 'waste of time' and just start
planning to replace the tranny NOW.. quoted me $5000!!!
oh, and as a favor he contacted the sales department and guess what
he said he could give me $1000 trade allowance for my 2001 v70
cross country wagon with 83000 miles on it..wow...are these guys
for reall or should i move to another dealer..i m tempted not to even
have these guys touch this car and actually pay to tow it to
another dealer 50 miles away!
what should i do need some fast advice!

$2500 would cover parts + labor
Go to an indy shop that specializes in Volvos. You can take to pretty much any import indy shop though, transmission replacement is pretty standard.
Problem comes with the ECU and transmission are paired together. Once you get a new transmission in, it will not work unless/until Volvo dealership does some programming.

Did he have a gold tooth? Find a reputable shop to install a volvo reman unit. Adaption and counters should be reset in the control module. Not sure if independent could do this. Unless they have VIDA
