Re: V70 engine blown - Help solve the mystery

Post by FireFox31 »

The engine replacement and other associated work was quoted at $5000. "Other associated work" includes replacing parts which may have been damaged by the drastically overheated engine. It also includes a new clutch (my request) and other non-engine lingering problems.

Even after $5000 repair, the engine heat may have damaged other components. The car's reliability has been compromised, so it's unfeasible to fix it.

Your suggestions have helped very much so far, so I have one last question:
What can I do with 2000 V70 5-speed manual whose engine is blown?
- Scrapyard
- Erie Vovo or Tom's
- Sell for parts myself
- Sell for rebuilding

Thanks for everything.

Not sure where you're located, but there is a 2002 V70 manual tranny for sale near me for 6500 obo (it's been advertised for awhile, so he would probably go lower).

Does anyone know what the camshaft reset valve is? That's the last work I had done on this car before it died, and I wonder if it had a part in the problem.

Before having the valve installed, I'd get an erratic rough idle after driving. ie: pulling into a parking spot, or stopping the car and starting it again shortly thereafter.

Perhaps my problems had been mounting and they finally hit all at once.

This car is now for sale. It is located in central New Jersey, currently at a shop. Towing is buyer's responsibility.

2000 V70 5-speed manual
Dark blue exterior, tan interior
160k miles, all scheduled services on time
As-is needing an engine swap or for parts

Separately selling rare mirrored-pair 850 Turbo Columba (Columbia) wheels with Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 tires mounted, less than 7 months old. I'm considering a price and will list these separately.

Make me an offer for the car (with stock wheels). Get it quick before I donate it for a tax write off. Contact me at [email protected] to discuss price and get more information. I will post pictures which are slightly old.

Recent work:
New breaks/rotors in front, back and parking, 11/08 - $1300
New Blizzaks on stock alloy wheels, 11/08 - $500
New front CV boots, 11/08 - $500
150k mile service, 11/08 - $600

What's great:
Very good body, no accidents, no rust.
All service records since 9/02, 50k miles.
Non-smoker, clean interior.

What's not great:
Engine blown from overheating.
Damaged other engine bay parts?
New clutch recommended, but not needed.
Ignition switch spins with wheel lock at full lock.
Base model: split cloth/vinyl, manual seats, no sunroof.
Loosening glue on driver door and some interiors.

Wow, didnt know you are in my neck of the woods.
Where did you service your car? Bridgewater vovlo? They are baaaad. Smythe volvo in Summit is only dealer I would take my car to in the whole state of NJ.

What other components? That doesn't make sense.

There is no such thing.

confused_al: Good to know we share a state. Years ago, Bridgewater Volvo serviced my family's three Volvos, until their service advisers proved incompetence enough times for me to leave. Their parts guys are great, though. The "legendary" Larry in Long Valley serviced the cars until he closed up shop. Since then, we've taken the long drive to Smythe in Summit. I trust their service advisers and the techs, and the cars have run with no problems... except the V70's sudden, harsh death.

tjts1: Below is a rough estimate for the full bill of work to swap the engine (not from Smythe, as mentioned above). I confirmed the part prices on FCP Groton, so I trust the quote. However, it's being cautious and replacing parts which may have been damaged by the engine overheat.

That's the problem, I'm not mechanically savvy enough to ensure the $5000 rebuild will get me another 100k miles. That's why I'll sell it, so an enthusiast can get a fun 5-speed for a minimalist $2500 rebuild (no labor cost, non-OEM parts, etc).

Costs:
$1050 engine from Erie
$1500 labor

Replace:
$375 - Ignition coils. Melted to head.
$400 - Engine components required by Erie, ie: timing belt, breather box, seals, water pump, coolant temp sensor.
$150 - Misc seals, oil, antifreeze.
$600 - Clutch, throwout bearing, etc. Not mandatory, my request.
$300 - Radiator, preventative.
$500 - Heater core?? preventative.
$400 - Ignition lock, preventative re: key sometimes spinning in ignition, noted in previous post.

Total: $5275

I'd do it for $3200 - $3500, but $5275 hurts.
