V70 - White coloured smoke when during acceleration.

Post by volvodownunder »

I recently bought a 2001 V70, and took it on my first trip in the country last week-end. I had it on cruise control most of the way, however whenever I needed extra power for overtaking slower traffic I noticed white (or light grey) coloured smoke from the exhaust. This was confirmed by a friend who was following me and he also said that the fumes had an unusual smell. It has got me worried :? .

White is moisture , blue is oil, black is gas. One of the byproducts of burning fossil fuels is water.Do you have a loss of coolant?

Thanks for your response. There is no loss in coolent. However, could there be moisture forming in the exhaust system when the car is on "cruise" (steady at one speed for long periods), and when I accelerate it (moisture) gets blown out as white smoke?. Still concerned.

When I first noticed the white smoke I was using Shell Optimax that has an Octane rating of 96. It also happened when used the Shell Std. unleaded that has an Octane rating of 91.
