Realigning the cam gears.....

Post by NightTrain »

Just got the new cylinder head in from Cylinder-Heads.com(btw.....great people to deal with) and my initial question before I attempt to get this beast back on the road is: Is there a certain position that the gears should be bolted in? Is there an alignment mark on the new camshaft that aligns with the gears? I didn't really see anything, but then again.....I didn't know what I was looking for either. I would hate to put the gear back on and align the marks....not knowing that it may be 90deg out, or worse.

I have heard that the guys in Clearwater are great, it is good that you confirm that since I have recommended them often but I have never actually used their services.

It is imperative that you shell out another $18.00 and get a Haynes Manual from a local auto parts store at this point. Don't waste your money on a Chiltons Manual as it will tell you nothing. The Haynes shows you, step by step, how to deal with the cam timing and show you how to build home brew tools to hold everything in place as it goes back together.

Already got the Haynes manual, but I haven't gotten that far into it....due to being out of town. I've also got the IPD alignment tool, so I'm thinking that I should be pretty much set, right?

I don't know if the IPD tool will hold everything in place without the cam cover bolted down. I would make the cam holding tool that is in the Haynes manual just in case. You do not want anything moving when you are bolting down the cover to the cams.
