94 850 wagon will not start
260,000 miles, new starter, new battery, new rpm sensor. Formerly an intermittent starting problem now consistently not starting unless drift started. Turns over fine, just does not start. I have been to the dealership and another mechanic which was no help. Any ideas?

Welcome to MVS,
It could be a number of things so we need to start at the beginning. You need to read the codes from Port A-2 and A-6 and post them back. You may or may not have any codes in A-6, the turbo cars don't use A-6.
If you are not familiar with how to read codes here is how it is done:
http://volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.php
Post any codes back and we can work from there.

Where do I get a code reader and how much does it cost?
Also I'm sure the dealer already did the code reader, and that is when the fault code for RPM sensor came up, and it was replaced for the second time this year, and the battery failed so it was replaced still with no success. Any other ideas?

Thank you very much about the information to read the codes. Unfortunately or fortunately, no faults were detected. Any other suggestions?
Curiously enough, someone suggested it may be the alarm relay. We attempted to check that relay, though being amateurs, not sure how to do that. So we tripped the alarm by locking the car, and attempting to open it. The alarm went off, and then when we started the car, it did start 3 times (without having to drift start
). However it then stopped starting again. We tripped the alarm again, but this time it still didn't start. This is a very frustrating problem. We greatly appreciate everyones help.

Dear Lee,
Thanks for the information. Just went back to your first response to me and realized my mistake. I thought the photo you sent me was a photo of a diagnostic tool and where in the car to hook it to. Realized my mistake after further research and helpful information from other readers. The a2 codes were no faults detected 1-1-1. However the A6 code was 2-1-4. I do not know what that means. Do you know or can you direct me to another source? Thank you so much for all your help. It is very much appreciated.

Just looked up the code on your site, and saw it was the rpm sensor missing sporatically. We just had a new one installed 1 week ago, and the one prior to that was this past January 2009. Any suggestions why the rpm sensor failing or history of bad connections in relationship with the sensors?
This is like a giant puzzle, and I would like to get it resolved and move on with life.
Thanks for everything. Have a great day.

In its natural state the lead from the RPM sensor wants to loop up next to the ignition wires. Volvo had a TSB that prescribed using a zip tie to fold hold the RPM sensor and Cam Position sensor leads away from the ignition wires.
Make sure the sensor wires are well clear of the ignition wires.
