Volvo Repair Database Volvo 96 850 Stereo LCD bulb replacement

Post by schigara »

I just replaced all the bulbs in the face of my stereo in my 96 850 PE. I found the write-up on changing the bulbs in the face but not one for changing the bulb for the LCD panel so I took pictures as I went along.

You can get replacement bulbs at Radio Shack, pn 272-1092 lamp. 2 for $1.79.

To get the front PCB(printed circuit board) out, refer to Bulb replacement

1. Once you have the front panel removed and the front PCB out, you need to remove the metal frame that surrounds the LCD. There are 4 tabs that go through the PCB and that need to be twisted about 45 degrees to get that frame off. You will notice the 4 tabs in the picture below. The tab at the top left arrow is soldered. You will need a de-soldering tool to suck that solder away.

2. Now that all 4 tabs have been released, the frame can be gently removed from the LCD. Push on the tabs from the back side to get it moving. Picture below shows the metal frame loose and ready to be lifted up.

3. The picture belows show the bulb that is revealed once the frame is removed.

4. The red arrow shows the two leads of the bulb that needs to be de-soldered and then remove the bulb.

5. Bulb removed.

6. Remove the black plastic base and the blue rubber nipple and put on the new bulb. Now just solder the new one in place, replace the metal frame and twist the tabs and solder the one back that you de-soldered earlier.

Well done, I'm going to pin this in the database. I've done this on two of mine but I never documented it. Your pictures make it much simpler than me trying to describe it.

Thanks,

Sweet! I pulled mine and replaced it tonight. We haven't been able to see the display at night for over a year+ What a change - and all for only a few bucks! This is a great fix. Note - that on my unit all four of the tabs to the frame were soldered to the pcb and had to un-soldered, twisted, and then re-soldered upon completion. I'm happy to have this done!

I've had them both ways - all 4 tabs soldered or only one tab soldered. The all 4 soldered tabs makes it a tad tougher to deal with but it is certainly doable.

I just removed the Faceplate on my Sc 816 and I cannot lift out the circuit board that the bulbs are attached to. I followed the directions on the other write-up, I do not see a ribbon cable ? What am I missing ?

Thank you so much Schigara. I went with the part number you gave and got the bulb. Had a hell of a time getting the solder on the cover to melt. Got the two outside corners free and folded cover up over display and got bulb changed. For some reason your pics wouldn't open for me, but your instructions made it clear.

The vanishing picture thing is a shame. We used to use 3rd party sites like Imageshack to host the pictures. What we have learned is that the picture hosting sites routinely purge images. Fortunately this all came at a time when MVS did some really major upgrades to the hardware (and software) side of the site and we can now host the pictures ourselves.

As the older posts with Imageshack pictures come up I have been downloading them and then hosting them here directly but sadly some are just lost forever.
