Volvo 1986 240 Transmission Relay

Post by spikestryker »

Where do I find the shift lockout relay? I think it has gone the way of aging Volvo Relays and needs cleaning and resoldering. The light goes on and off but no shifting occurs. Also where is the solinoid that it activates? Your advice has been invaluable in the past on my old friends the 240's and 940's.

I've made a guess that it's the overdrive relay you are after. The attached shows all of the relays in the passenger compartment.

Thanks Bill. I will take a look at it later on today. My 940 is also having some problems along the same line. Light coming on at half brightness, not upshifting and so on. I will take a look at that as well. In the 240 the light goes on and off as it should but nothing else happens.

Mike, also check the switch. They have been known to "get tired".

Hi Bill:

Thanks so much for your help! My 940 needed some solder on the relay board. The 240 needed a short piece of wire added to the circuit. The wire from inside the car to the transmission solenoid had broken off. Both cars are 100% now with fresh synthetic oil, filters, antifreeze, steering and brake fluid. I am so pleased with myself and also with your good help.

Thanks so much!

Mike
