What is the best way to test an ignition coil?

you need to tet the coil for
voltage
trigger signal
primary resistance
secondary resistance
ability to fire under load

Work backwards its faster

Get a spark gap tester and see if the coil is producing spark.
If not check for voltage at the coil and then for signal at the coil.
you can use a test light to test for voltage (clip to ground and test on coil positive)
Test signal with clip on battery positive and test to coil negative - while cranking engine the light should blink

Let us know what you found.

You need a resistor or a big spark gap to check for ability to fire under load.

Actually tonight might be the best time to check things, look at it in the dark and see if it is arcing.

As it turned out it was not a spark problem at all, but vacuum. Your advise helped me come to this conclusion. The old girl is running again, thank you.
