+1 voltech.

Find a reputable indy shop. I would say the best deal would be have them install a Volvo re manufactured, then have it towed to your nearest volvo dealership for reprogramming. It will still be cheaper than having Volvo do it.

Have I missed something on this one? Has anyone bothered to get the codes out of the car? If an error has generated a light you should have some codes that might tell you something more than what it appears you have so far.

Not to generate any false hope, but I had a tranny error and check engine light come on (with the appropriate codes set) indicating a mis-read of the gear selector switch. The car went into limp-home mode but would reset to normal (with just a check engine light) after a re-start at least until I had to go into reverse. I freaked out thinking I was into a new tranny after reading all the stuff on the forums. Bottom line was that it was caused by the connector between the gear selector switch and the harness getting wet due to me being a bit energetic with a hose during a wash. A bit of silicone spray and a dose of silicone grease and I haven't had a problem since.

What I am saying is get the codes read and see what you might be into before you start ripping the car apart. Might be something relatively simple.

Good luck,

Bill
