When I took a look behind the standard CR-905 stereo I noticed two things;
1. the AMP din socket on the stereo is unused; I thought these cars all had a separate amp or was it optional only?
2. Hovering around the back of the unit I also saw a thick cable with a round 8 pin plug on the end. What's that one for?
many thanks as ever!
what's the 8 pin plug behind my 850 dash for..?

Round 8 pin plug is for a CD Changer. It is either ran back to the trunk (left rear wheel well area, or sometimes to the glovebox)
I believe the AMP socket is there incase you want to add another amp to the system. You would need the volvo plug to plug into the back of the stereo. Then I assume it would have two rca type jacks to run to your amp. Let me know what you find. I tried to research that amp plug but got nowhere. I could not find anyone who had a adapter to fit.

What confuses me is that this 8 pin plug doesn't have anywhere to go on the head unit. There is a socket market cd on the headunit, but it is much smaller than this plug.TuHandy wrote:Round 8 pin plug is for a CD Changer. Any thoughts gratefully received...

Your head unit must not be capable of running a cd changer. On the back of mine it has a socket for cd changer and for amp. I forget the model numbers for the different head units but some are capable of running a cd changer and some are not.
Either someone changed out your head unit or the factory just runs the cable in case you get the upgraded head unit??????

Thanks - I think the car must have had a non Volvo head unit and CD changer, and when I bought the car, the Volvo unit must have been put back in, with the CD changer cable left in place. Sadly they didn't forget to take the changer out..!
