They're in the compressor clutch. Search the repair database -there are writeups on how to change them.

Had the same thing happen to me. I kept telling them that I thought it was an electrical problem because it would work fine for several days, then stop, then work again, then stop. Oh, and I found that if I turned the AC off for a minute or two, including the fan, then turned it back on, it would work fine.

After the dealership wasted my money by replacing refrigerant, and it still worked, they came back to tell me that it was some kind of electrical thingy in the AC compressor (can't remember the name of the part, but it wasn't the compressor clutch and it didnt have anything to do with shims) and that the entire system would have to be replaced because the one piece that wasn't working could not be replaced on its own.

Glad I didn't get it fixed, as I just totaled my S40.

I had this problem - took me awhile to solve it. The A/C (the compressor) would turn off after driving about 20 minutes and I would turn the fan to medium or low. I would turn off the A/C for a few minutes, return the fan to high and it would come back one - at least for awhile. Seems this problem would get aggravated with higher outside temperate and heavy traffic.

I brought my 2005 S40 in to Volvo 3 times! Each time they were unable to duplicate the problem, and therefore would not fix it. The vehicle was under warranty so as long as I could get the thing to fail, it would be covered. I finally was so frustrated that I made an appointment, drove the car in and left the engine running after the air had failed. They determined it was indeed the clutch in the compressor - however the warranty would not replace the entire compressor; only the clutch. Volvo repair had never replaced the clutch and did not even have the proper tools to do so. I had to leave the car for a few days while they sorted it all out. They gave me a free rental so I was OK.

So if your car is still under warranty, make sure that you bring it in to Volvo and leave the engine on with the A/C compressor failed or they will have to drive it around until it does - if it doesn't, they won't replace the clutch and charge you for the time they spend getting it to try and fail. If your car is not under warranty, don't have them replace the whole compressor, just the clutch. Parts came to $314 and labor came to $295. My payment was $0 as I didn't have a deductible.

For the record the statement says "Cust. states A/C stops blowing cold after driving in traffic for 20 minutes/like compressor stops working. Fault traced A/C system found compressor clutch to have too large of air gap 2.50 removed compressor and replaced clutch evacuated 1.17 lbs of R134A and charged 1.17lbs."

I hope that helps, this WEB site sure helped me. E-mail me if you have any questions, I will be happy to pass on my discoveries.
