starter problems

my starter is i think shot.....it works when it feels like it...when i turn the key usually it will crank then just go into this humming noise...when i turn the key back..it seems like it stops turning really hard.,....if anybody knows what the problem is if they've had it before or anything..i would appreciate if you would let me know...so i can get that fixed..im on the verge of jsut putting a new starter in it and see where that gets me...to the best of my knowledge that is the problem

It sounds like the solenoid contacts are burned . They are replaceable but someone had posted a while back about reversing the contacts.

Your starter symptoms are identical to the ones I had. I replaced the starter and all is well now. No easy job, but I was able to do it.
