smell of raw gas

Post by windy3 »

I have a 1992 volvo 740 wagon I just got in july 2004 with only 164000 miles. When the car sits for a while on warm /sunny days and I get in the car I smell gas fumes. Once I start the car and drive it the smell goes away. I dont see or smell gas in the engine compartment. Could it be the charcoal cannister or fuel vapor lines? If so how do I check them?

Hi Windy3

I had the same problem.

Check that the rubber grommit (not sure what to call it) behind the fuel filter flap (fits around the fuel cap) is installed properly, and not allowing spilt fuel to get in behind the body.

Upon squeezing this grobbit back onto its fitting edges fuel could not drop behind the body panels anymore and it stopped the smell.

Good luck

Hello - I had a similar problem on my '88 760. It took me awhile to figure out where it was coming from - turns out it was the rubber bushings on the fuel injector jets. There is a littel rubber O-ring that shrunk away with time and seeped fuel while the car was parked. I took it to the dealer to have fixed - not too expensive. They tried to get me to replace the jets but I told them no and just to replace the O-rings. It's fine and I have not had a problem. Good luck!

Thank you for your input. I took the car to a volvo shop and they found the problem quickly. Turns out the car had some body work on the left side and they cut into the filler neck of the fuel tank while making repairs to the quarter pannel. To fix the problem they taped it up with who knows what. The volvo dealer made perm. repairs. All is well . Thanks again. Windy 3
