99 v70 awd-front oxygen sensor

hello everyone,
i am buying a 99 v70 awd with 57K mileage and it needs a front oxygen sensor replacement. The part is 200bucks and I am wondering if this something I can replace myself?

It is a very easy thing to do yourself so you should definitely DIY. If you need the O2 sensor, you can find it here.

This will probably be the best price for that part. You can do it yourself if you have a little automotive knowhow and some tools. Be aware that these things are sometimes very difficult to remove in one piece, i.e. they weld themselves in due to the heat but the front I find is usually easier.

but i will get this one since it is less than half price.

i have 2 more questions.
-what does this sensor do and driving with the bad sensor will cause something big?
-where is it located?

The front sensor is fitted into the side of the exhaust just in front of the catalytic converter. You should probably confirm that it is indeed the sensor that needs to be replaced. A bad sensor usually amounts to nothing more then poor gas mileage.

The front sensor helps the ECU (computer) control the air to fuel ratio and if it is bad the car may run too rich. The front O2 sensor on my 98 V70 AWD is a little hard to get to. Basically, you need to get under the car and find the catalytic converter, then follow the exhaust pipe forward to find the front sensor. It's below the turbo if you know where that is. I'm attaching a picture of mine.

The big round thing at right is the exhaust pipe and the sensor is sticking our to the left. I suggest you go to Advance Auto or another parts store and buy a special O2 sensor socket-that will make easier to get the old one out. It's a tight space and it's hard to get a regular wrench in there. Also, another tricky part is getting the electrical connector loose. Another picture. As I recall, the connector is easier to reach from above in the engine compartment. As I recall, you need to pull the black part away from the red part. Once the red part is pulled out a little, it will free up the connector male part from female part. If this is incorrect, maybe someone else can comment. Hope this helps.

thanks guys, i ordered my o2 sensor from amazon.
i need to replace the the timing belt as well.
i just called the volvo parts and asked about the price.
it is 63 bucks.
should i get this from the dealer or somewhere else i can find cheaper?
I am going to get my buddy to change both of them since i don't have the tools and he is good and doing it for a reasonable price for me.

You can get an OEM timing belt for around $25 from FCP or eEuroparts or go to a local parts store in your area. You don't need to get the belt from the dealer.

Make sure and change your tensioner too... this is mucho important. Don't just change your belt- it it needs changing, so does the mechanical tensioner on your particular V70.
