possible to retrofit?

Post by brick8 »

I have been following this site with some anxiety as I am the proud owner of at 2000XC70. Just curious if anyone has successfully retrofitted this generation of Volvo with the throttle body from an 850 (drive by cable instead of drive by wire). If so, how difficult is the conversion and does it work?

I may sound dumb in asking this... but why would you want a throttle body from a 93-97 year car on an 00? shouldnt your be better

I assume that would be necessary in order to do away with the ETM. I have owned many volvos with the older set-up and never had any problems with it. The ETM seems to be a real problem that is expensive to fix.

Wouldn't work- all kinds of electronics and computer controls go into operating the ETM...you switch it out with a non ETM throttle module and cruise control won't work, air/gas ratio will be off- car would stumble and throw all kinds of codes. Just my guess, but I say it won't work.

Bummer. Maybe I should ditch the 2000 and buy a nice 1998.

Rob, Volvo's from around 99 to 01 I believe were fitted with Electronic Throttle Modules which have been shown to be defective. Volvo extended the warranties on these parts because they all fail in less then 10 years. Brick8 probably wants to switch because the 850 throttle bodies are far more reliable.

Brick8, your still under the 10 year warranty period, why don't you take advantage of the "recall" and have Volvo replace the ETM?

I checked with the dealer and they said the warranty had expired. They are so difficult to work with that I am sure that even it really is covered they would find a way to charge me a $1,000.

Ah ok this makes more sense. Also makes me glad to drive an 850
