when I hit the shifter it kicks into overdrive... and then sometimes pops back out.
I found that if I shift the OD in and out w/ 'the button' manuelly it acts better.... but still inconsistent.
cool car... I would spend money on it, but I think the tranny may be on it's way to the big $ repair shop.
is this a common symtom for a simple problem or is it a sign of old age (aldheimer's of the tranny?)

I believe that what you're experiencing is a common problem, and that you need a new overdrive relay, about a 50 buck part. my car does it too.

we had the same problem w/our 88 740t. the relay was cheap, but the labor to take the transmission apart to access the relay was really expensive (sorry I don't remember how much - it was 12 years ago!)
I'll give you the same tip i gave less than one month ago to Lasvegascruice. If the overdrive is getting off and on and the indication lamp is actually indicating the same, it is most probably something wrong with the OD relay. Take it out and open it carefully. Inside you will most probably find some cracks in the soldering on the PC board. Resolder everything that is looking bad. Install it and it will work again! This solution has been described several times in this forum, and by the feedback, it seems to be a working solution in most cases.
