How long do I have to change brake pads?

Hi. I just found out that my brake pads may need changing. I am now hearing the grinding, scratching noise. How long can I wait to change the pads until there may be brake damage? Miles or time? Thanks for your input.

Assuming it's the brake wear indicator that's doing the screeching then it may be too late or, hopefully you are on borrowed time. Replacing brakes is really easy and cheap so do it ASAP.
