1999 V70, Radiator Replacement

Post by vooman82 »

I have a '99 V70, manual transmission, non-turbo, that I need to replace the radiator on.

Does anyone have instructions for this? I saw another thread with instruction for an '02 Turbo, but was hoping for more relevant instructions. Do I need any special tools for this? Does this AC connect to the main radiator?

Thanks,

AC does not connect to the radiator...but you'll have to be careful of the condenser/dryer when you lower the radiator out of the car. Here is the write-up on the 850- yours isn't much different: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/Radiator850turbo.php

the two long bolts on the sides that hold rad. in are in with locktite, I think. Anyway, be careful when backing these off: you might have to work it off and then on again as you lossen it in order to get it off without stripping the bolt.

Also be careful that the tabs that hold the radiator up are plastic (and they can break)... just hold it steady when you take the bolts off. Good thing you don't have a turbo...you have to drop out the intercooler with the radiator if you did.... more room to work in your case and getting the fan out is a cinch!

I think the V70s are the same as my 850. I replaced the radiator on my '94 850 N/A with a manual transmission a couple of weeks ago and, other than a problem with the bolt that holds the lower radiator mount in - it is a captive nut that decided to no longer be captive - it was pure cake. On a N/A and non turbo there are no oil lines to deal with and there is no intercooler. It comes out from the top just fine.

PB Blaster the crud out of all of the bolts from the get go for added assurance that things come out smoothly.

Well, I was successful replacing the radiator although it wasn't pretty. Most of the bolts were rusted out, even with PB Blaster, they were a pain and several snapped. I made due from the hardware store and the local NAPA autoparts. I called the dealer, but of course they don't stock that type of stuff and I would have had to wait a few more days.

Lesson learned on working on an older car. Check the bolts and HW that will need to be replaced also and order that along with whatever main stuff you need.

Thanks for the help, I wouldn't have known where to start without the insight from you folks.
