How long do they last?

Post by Jonathan »

I am looking for my very first Volvo. The look and the price of 850 is ideal for me. Yesterday, I saw a well maintained 94 Volvo 850 Wagon non-turbo, AT with 198K miles on original motor and tranny. With proper maintanence how long do they usually last? Any info is appreciated.

The first question to ask is ,Are there service records? A relative purchased a wagon last year with 250K and is still running strong.

I second the above remark... ONLY buy a Volvo with good service records. If neglected, the cars will last no longer than any other but simply cost more.

If taken great care of, you could expect at least 275k out of an 850.

I would check for:

Has the timing belt been changed?
Has the flame trap/PCV been cleaned?
Are there any leaks of oil, trans fluid etc?
Has the transmission fluid been flushed (ever)?

These things, if not doen could lead to disaster.
