240 wagon timing gear instructions and how to set timing.

Post by butchkimball »

Hello.
I bought a used 1990 240 wagon 6 monthe ago and had a few problems with the wiring someone re did.
Now thats fixed the timing belt broke. I was wondering if anyone has the info on how to line up the gears when I get the new belt on, so it is in time. I know I could probable buy a manual but I am strapped for cash right now.

Thanks

Butch Kimball

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The timing marks are in the attachment:

When aligning the crankshaft marks you need to bring #1 cylinder to compression TDC. Remove the spark plug from #1 and put your thumb over the hole. Rotate the crankshaft until you feel pressure coming up the plug hole and stop when the marks align. To check that this is the compression you would normally check to see which valve is open but without the timing belt the valves won't move. Remove the distributor cap and see which lead the rotor is pointing at. If it is #1 you are on the compression stroke.

To align the camshaft marks turn it by hand until the #1 inlet valve is opening and line up the marks.

The timing marks on the auxiliary shaft are not crucial.

If you need instructions for the belt replacement do a search as it has been covered recently.

Just browsing here, and had to reply.

On a 240 where the distributor is on the drivers side of the head, toward the front ...the intermediate shaft is CRITICAL. It actually turns the distributor.

Many B230 motors have the distributor at the end of the head ..right up next to the firewall. On these the shaft alignment is not a concern.

Here is a guide that will help.
