Can you throw up a couple of pictures or what you are dealing with? I am having trouble figuring out if the problem is with the quick connect clamps at the firewall junction (on the hose side) or the firewall junction itself.
If it is the latter you are basically screwed until you get the new pipe kit. You can - if you need the car - just go buy a chunk of heater hose and bypass the heater core at the block temporarily.

can i remove heater hoses on 1995 850 without removing the quick disconnet coupling r do i have to install a new coupler when replacing just the heater hoses. how do u remove hoses from coupler

It is kinda like a Dirty Harry movie - do you feel lucky? In theory you can unplug the heater hoses from the firewall junction via the quick connect couplers and then snap them back in place. If you are buying new hoses they should come with a new connector kit anyway, if they don't come with the hoses order new connector kits and replace them as a part of the job.

I'm trying to remove the old hoses from the firewall. Is there a trick to getting them out of the coupler? It seems better to leave the metal cover plate on, but I'm not familiar with these plastic couplers. Are you supposed to squeeze the yellow plastic collars to get them to pop out?
I found this thread with pictures. No need to remove the metal cover. I just used a couple small screwdrivers on either side of the clamp and they pulled right out.

No need to remove the metal cover at all unless there is a problem with the pipes. Squeeze the release tabs, and while continuing to squeeze push them inward - toward the back of the car - until you feel the click. Continuing to squeeze the tabs then pull them out from the firewall towards the front of the car.
It all works great right up to the point where one of the squeeze tabs breaks off. You then have a fight on your hands.

I didn't have to push the conectors into the firewall, just inserted screwdrivers in the sides, squeezed and they pulled out rather easily. You need a 7mm wrench to loosen the clamps on the other end of the hoses, at the block and coolant rail. Pretty easy job if you already have half the engine removed like I do.
I should have this car on the road in another week. Now I'm off to get a 17mm spanner and 7mm wrench. I've amassed quite a tool collection in the past few months. Now I'm waiting for parts again. I might do a full turbo rebuild kit if I can separate it from the wastegate and get it out. I think I can.

Well, my turn. I'm going through this now. And of course T-5 has the Turbo in the way... I'm not qualified, nor brave enough, to remove it - but right now I think I need to in order to reach the return line hose clamp. How wrong am I? Have other T-5 owners succeeded at this and left the Turbo in place? The photo shows what I see when looking down at it. Cramped eh? And turbo components and various hoses kill the angle to get to the clamp.
Next, similar to other questions on this, is the handling of the interior pipes to the core. It seems to me that I must disconnect the pipes at the lower end with the single screw that screws in towards front (which is the mounting screw I secured when I put the new core in last year. Am I right? I may have misunderstood an earlier post that I should be able to remove the pipes from the firewall connector, but I see no clean way to disconnect the upper end of the pipes to the connector. Wrong assumption? I should be able to disconnect at the top without dismounting the pipes at the lower junction?
Any comments appreciated, as I'm hanging fire on getting this completed - and there's a wife involved... lol.

Have owned 7 Volvos over the years. Current one is 1997 850 T-5 wagon. 190,000 miles. Which, in the last year has needed:
Heater core,
Fuel pump and filter,
Radiator hoses,
Water pump,
Starter -
and now, heater hoses and firewall connector.
Yet to come:
Rear tailgate strut,
Under dash vent ducting repairs,
... and who knows?
