Heater Hose Replacement - Generic Hose

Post by PeteB »

I remember seeing a thread or video on this but have searched here
and youtube and can't seem to find it. I think they cut off the metal
crimp with a cutoff wheel and then just used hose clamps on the
generic hose. Anyone know where this is documented?

Edit, found this JDS60R wrote:

I like the couplers. I don't want any underhood gasses to make it into the cabin. For $33 (new OE coupler) I think its worth it. I remake the hoses with powergrip clamps to avoid the high cost of new ones. I use "advanced formula" hylomar on the orings and we have zero leak problems.
The main problem we did run into was the aftermarket hoses. That's why I switched to Gates hose on the OE ends."

I still can't find the thread where the repair is described. I don't want to do
the coupler delete.

Have you sprung a leak on the OEM? These hoses are really high quality and I would think twice about replacing them

abscate - no, no leak just suggested since they are so old with so many miles. They are a bit soft it seems to me.

cn90 - I'm not having any issues in the car so I just wanted to change them from the firewall to engine. I seem
to remember a thread where the ends were reused and I want to read it before I try this.

This is the picture that I was thinking of, I don't think that those are the correct ends
but the idea is the same, replace with good quality generic heater hose:

I did replace mine, Pete, but I gave my old ones to someone with a clean conscience. The rubber on these is top quality and very thick. I would hold off on that job unless they really look bad

I'm also surprised by the quality of those hoses. Mine are 22 years old and holding up well. One of the keys is keeping good coolant in the system.

One caution in moding the hoses is if you crimp or have a sharp bend, it will restrict the flow and you will have heating issues.

I read the title and thought it was exactly what I wanted then started to
read the whole thing and then thought it was actually about straight lines from
the block to the heater core. I might have had two threads open at the same
time and confused them, it is very easy to get into information overload here.
Thanks for the heads up, I will read it again.

OK cn90 you wrote this: "and simplified the system by using this approach: Heater Core ---> Cut Pipes ---> Generic Heater Hoses ---> Gutted Coupler ---> Re-used the barb fittings ---> Generic Heater Hoses ---> Engine"

Why a gutted coupler, I don't want to do that, just want to reuse the plug in fittings.

You also write: "-Anyway, this is my experience with ebay Heater Core ($40 incl. shipping), and used standard heater hoses to simplify this whole convoluted Volvo setup."
This is not what I want to do, and that is why I didn't read it all.

Are you telling me to reread it with regard to this? "Since others have reported the heater hoses can burst, dumping coolant in a matter of seconds and since the heater hoses are 18 years/167K old, it is time to replace them on a preventive basis. This is one job you do NOT want to do in the middle of nowhere, trust me."

And that is probably good advice so I'm back to considering replacing the hoses
under the hood with good quality generic.
