Stalling 850 turbo

Post by jesse »

Help..... i have an 850 turbo wagon. It's great ride but it getting pretty old and lately, it's been stalling out on me. It's happening all the time. The RPMs just drop and the dash lights up! It's happened on the highway at full speed as well( which was sketchy ). I've brought it to my garage but they can't pin point a problem... Any suggestions what may be the cause or any advice???
Thanks a million..

What year is the car? Does the check engine light come on? Does the car start right back up after it dies or do you have to wait?

If the doesn't come on, chances are good that it's either the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. If the CEL does come on, a lot more possibilities present themselves, but the problem does become much easier to pinpoint.

It's a 94. The "check engine" light doesn't come on and for the mot part, if I let it sit for a bit, it re-starts with no problem after a stall. I think I will begin by replacing the fuel pump relay and see if it helps...

So more feedback...

I'm getting the butterfly in the Throttle Valve cleaned tomorrow. I was told THIS is the first step to take before replacing any parts. If the stalling still occurs, the problem may be much larger but for sure, if anybody else out there is experience a similar problem, do this first and it might save some big $$$... If it fixes the problem, I'll throw up a post!

I have the same problem with my 850 stalling just out of the blue, turn the key on 3 or 4 times and it's just fine until a couple of days later, it stalls again. My husband does all the repairs because I can't afford dealership. Problem seems to occurring more often, hot/cold/wet/dry weather. Would like to know how you solve your problem.

I have an '94 850 Wagon that does the same for the last several years. It will stall out at any given time but appears to be worse in warm weather. I had the fule pump replaced but that does not seem to be the problem. A few weeks ago it wouldn't start for me and has been sitting ever since. I don't know if the starting is related to the stalling but would like some advice.

If it stalls out during any condition, that is just idling, while your traveling at normal speed, suspect something called the CMP (Cam sensor) It is easy to get to and you can replace yourself if you have any mechnical skills at all.

In my case, I have the mysteious stalling out now only when decelerating (coming to a stop) It's a lunging/rough idle feeling and then it just quits (dashboard lights all light up like a Christmas tree). Seems to become more frequent when outside temperature is above 15C dgrees centigrade. I'm a Yank but I think I have to disconnect the battery terminal to get the "english" units back (20C=70F roughly). My manual is inside my glovebox that, of course, won't open anymore, but that's a defect for another thread...

Dangerous really since all of a sudden your power steering and power braking is much harder so I'm keeping my distance from those in front of me so I am driving like a"senior citizen". Never have "tailgaters" been more of a PITA but when they rear end me I guess they'll learn.

The Volvo dealer im my area is really disappointing since I just took it in to have the leaking gas tank recall addressed and I mentioned this to the guy at the desk but of course they didn't even offer any tips to try but saw it as just another way to make more in repairs (instead of helping solve yet another considered "defect").

Above all else, a car should NEVER just SHUT DOWN. That is a class-action lawsuit waitng to happen. '94 850.

I'm gonna try cleaning the butterfly valve thingy in the throttle assembly mentioned in a post above and see if that helps.
