Timing belt broke has anyone had just the head rebuilt

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

A few members have done that. Not an impossible job to do. Need new valves probably, new head gasket, possibly new piston(s) depending on how bad the damage is.

Yes,
You are going to pull the head either way so remove it and check the pistons etc. If its just a few valves then ok to rebuild. A rebuilt head only goes for about $450 so you can compare the repair cost to the new head.
If the car has high mileage consider that a rebuilt head has new guides, seals and springs that have tested to be within spec.

If the pistons are damaged beyond use then you may want to consider a used motor unless you can do the work yourself.

Do whatever is best for your situation and budget

i snapped my timing belt, and we have just put a new timing belt on and lined it all up properly. went to go crank it and it sounds like the engine running freely with no compression what could this be, and is it worth fixing i really do love my car thought

You have bent valves from when the belt snapped. Head needs to be replaced or rebuilt (as in valves replaced).
As to weather its worth fixing its really only a question you can answer. Depends on how much you have invested in the car, cost to replace it, how much work you can do yourself and what other issues it has.

Are you posting for an S80 or 850? If its an 850, I would suggest you post a new thread on the 850 board: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... um.php?f=1

There's no recipe here, you'll have to open up and assess the damage. Like said, you may have damaged piston(s) as well, and they're connected to the crank - so you'll need to examine connecting rods, bearings, wrist pins, crank journals, cylinder walls. New/used engine may be your best bet - again upon assessment.

Are you in the Minneapolis area? I checked with a local shop here the other day about replacing two bent valves, vacuum testing and cleaning up a head. He said it would run about $100.00. They also do lower engine work. I can get you contact info if you're interested.
