1996 volvo 850 non-turbo.
My car has been driving perfectly the whole time that I've had it. Yesterday I went to the store and came home then she died.
I tried to start the car about an hour after I got back, it sputtered, all of the dash lights flashed on and off. It turned over and then it shook for a few second and turned off. I tried again and this time I tried to give it gas but the gas pedal was spongy. I put it in reverse and it moved about 6 inches and died.
I waited until morning and tried again. The starter is working because when I turn the key it seems as if it's trying to start but it won't catch.
I thought that maybe it was out of gas so I put gas in it but same thing. No more sputtering just the starter and it trying to turn over and nothing. The battery is fully charged so it's not that.
I have no idea what could possibly be wrong with it. I checked the oil and it's a little dirty but full. All fluids are full. I won't have money to take it to a shop for a few days so I thought I'd come on here for suggestions since you guys are all so helpful.
What do you all think? Anyone else have this problem?
Freaked out,

Uh oh sounds like what happened to me - it was the fuel pump. DO you do any of your own repairs? You can follow the proceedure for changing the fuel filter to see if there is any fuel pressure past the pump (let off pressure, try to start car and then check again).
Good luck!

Thanks Tina
,
It was the fuel pump. I bought a used one from the salvage yard for 80 dollars and my friend installed it.
45 minutes worth of work.

I think based in my personal experience that your problem is the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. I had same problem twice and in both cases it was thefuel pump . Usualy when I change the fuel pump I always chance the relay.
