Volvo 2000 s40 transmission fluid drain plug lacation find

Post by hujcidupe »

Please advise where is the transmission fluid drain plug located on a Volvo 2000 s40? I need to change transmission fluid on a car that has close to 200K miles? Do I need to drop the transmission pan to change the transmission fluid? If I drop the transmission pan do I need to install ne pan gasket? Also what kind of transmissionfluid should I replace the old transmission fluid with? I just purchased this used Volvo 2000 s40 recently. The vehicle has close to 200K miles on it. I just changed the engine oil today. I recently just replaced the front struts and springs. I think that I will have to replace the brake pads as well. What else do you recommend that I should do before I register the car?
Also just to add the previous owner had a problem with the cd player. One of the cd is stuck and will not come out. it plays well otherwise but always the same cd. is there anyway that i can remove it without breaking the unit altogether?

Thanks for your assistance in this matter and hope that you have a great day.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

This shows the location of the drain plug. You don't need to drop the transmission pan but if you did you would most certainly need a new gasket.

According to Volvo the transmission fluid only needs to be changed in the following circumstances:
1. Diagnostic trouble code AT-235 has been stored indicating the fluid temperature is too high.
2. If the fluid smells burnt and is discoloured with no diagnostic code stored.
3. Cars in continuous taxi use or extensive trailer towing.

You need Dexron 111 or similar or a fluid to Ford Mercon standards.

Do a search on the forum for the stuck CD. It has been covered with various solutions.

Bill,

Where can I see the picture of the drain plug location? I cannot find any attachment to your reply.
And where/how can I see the diagnostic trouble code?

Thanks,
Tommy

I apologize and can only plead overwork with a touch of insanity for this oversight.

The code would be found using a scanner. The warning lamp would flash if the gearbox temperature exceeded 140C for 5 seconds and the code would be stored. The warning lamp would switch off when the temp dropped below 135C.
