Reviving a gem of a garage find - Draining Fuel Tank
I took possession of a sweet clean '88 240 DL that has been garaged in storage for 7 years. It only has 57K original miles. It was definitely not prepped for storage. So, I have quite a list of things to do before attempting to bring it back to life. First is to get rid of the nasty gas that is still in the fuel tank. I don't want to pump any of that through the system. There is a large phillips head screw/bolt underneath at the bottom center of the tank. Is that a drain plug that I can use?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
That is a drain plug. You will need a new gasket when replacing it.
Some of the 240s had metal fuel tanks and some had plastic. If it is metal there will be a fair amount of rust in the tank after standing for so long. Some will come out when you drain it but a lot will still be on the metal. You will need to seal this with something like POR-15. Hopefully it is plastic.
Good luck with this project and keep us informed.
Bill.

Hello,
I have a similar question.
I just purchased a 94 850 Turbo Sedan. Very nice car
It has been sitting for a while and the gas is terrible. Yello/orange color and smells deisel-ish, kerosine-y...
The fuel pump was not working and was cause for its being parked.
I just removed the pump assembly, The pump was jammed. After wiring it to a 12 volt source and 'tapping' it a few times. It started running and spit out junk.
However, I found that the spring was missing and lower vibration damper was disintegrating. Also the fuel hose from pump to housing assembly was soft/melted/rubbery.
I have ordered a new fuel pump and filter. Was hoping to use this pump to 'pump out the old gas'.
But it only trickles out of the hose.
The tank is plastic, There is some sort of threaded thing in the middle of the tank on its lower side. Is that a drain plug. If so how does it get removed? It does not have a hex head or any type of allen/torx head. It has a threaded hole and fins around it.
Does it comes off/out? If so, how?
Anyone know? Car will start and run barely. do not want to run this gas and foul injectors.
Thank you.
Bob
