Blew a seal

Post by jmax »

Aside from smiling while being reminded of the joke about the penguin who broke down in the desert and got covered with ice cream while the car was being worked on, I am frowning over the $450 estimate to replace an oil seal on my 2001 v70 t5. Any input on that estimate?

I am experiencing a similar problem. Did you ever get yours done, how much and where? I am thinking I will replace the entire engine rather than pay $450 + $250 for the timing belt that they want to change on my 165K engine.

Unless you've got a pos engine, I think it would be crazy to swap motors just to save on a timing belt. A low mile engine would probably be fairly expensive and if you get one with higher miles you'll be looking at the tb again soon anyway. (needs to be done at 105k). Labor on a motor swap would more than likely be higher than just a tb change as well, and if you are handy enough to swap a motor yourself, you should be able to handle the tb change no problem.
