Hello from Jakarta - Indonesia

Post by TPO911 »

Hi All, my name is Tommy Poesoro. I am from Jakarta - Indonesia and have just joined this Volvo Forum. I own a 1996 960 Turbo matic and a 2002 S40 Turbo matic.
I plan to purchase a scanning tool for my Volvos, and have recently come across an ad where a Volvo Scanning Tool is offered. It comprises of a RS232 cable connector to the ECU and a disc. The program can be installed on a PC. The tool is compatible with FCR version 1.3. Does anybody know whether this scanning tool is worth buying (costs a total USD 53 inclusive of handling and postage)?
Another question : is there a tool that can modify settings on the ECU that is available in the market, and how much would it cost?
Thank you All.

Welcome, Tommy.

Do you have a link to the scan tool you're thinking about buying? $53 is reasonable, but I'd like to see the brand.

As for writing to the ECU, that's a far more costly endeavor. IPD has a product for that called Softloader Engine Management Tool, and it's for 1999+ turbo Volvos.

Thanks forthe reply Matthew.

And here are the details of the tool price and the link :

Item:VOLVO SCANNER
http://www.autonumen.com/product_show.asp?id=1675
Unit price:USD25
Shipping cost:USD25
Payment term: Paypal
Handling charge:USD3
Total payment: USD53

BTW it is a pitty that the SEM Tool can be used only for 1999+ cars...

The initial purpose for me having that scanner tool was actually to see if there are faults that can be identified and eventually repaired or adjustments made to make my 1996 960 turbo more efficient.
I only manage to get 6.5 kilometers per litre of octane 91 gasoline while driving in the city. Of course Jakarta is a very crowded city with many traffic jams, but I could not get more than 7.8 kilometers per litre on highways. I carbon cleaned the engine myself using a DCS treatment, and it helped me to get the above figures. Prior to the Carbon Clean I could only get 5.3km/ltr in the city.

Sorry for the late reply. That scanning tool looks to be ok. But really it depends on the software... good software is going to make it a joy to use, bad software will make it difficult to use.

I'm moving this to the 960 forum because you may not need a code reader for that car. Perhaps someone there will know.

The '96 960 does need a code reader.
