2001 V70 X/C with diagnostic code P0810??

Post by vovogirl »

Warning light on of course, scanner gives 2 codes P1618 ( I understand this is a general code), and a P0810 (clutch position control malfunction??) The car has an auto tranny. I've noticed no problems with the transmissions operation. Anyone with ideas what to do? I've had the codes cleared and the warning light came back on a few days later.
Thanks! Debbie

P1618 is a communications fault between the Engine Control Unit and the Transmission Control Unit. They basically cannot talk to each other.

Your P0810 seems to go with it and the consensus answer when you have both codes seems to be a new software download for the TCU. Sadly, that is a dealer only repair.

I have know real knowledge of your car so I am going to move you to the appropriate forum for some more learned advice.

Do you know if the transmission software update was ever done on this car?

2001's have a "feature" where the transmission disengages the torque converter at a stop, essentially putting the car in neutral. It...doesn't work, and ends up destroying the transmissions in most 2001's.

The remedy for that is a software update that Volvo SHOULD make free, but I'm not sure what the standard rate for applying such an update is.

Probably a good idea to do a transmission flush in the near future once you get your car back, especially if it has never been done before.

Armed with knowledge gained on this site, I took my V70 XC to the dealer and requested them to do the software upgrade. The service writer obviously was not aware that an upgrade existed. I also refused to pay the usual service cost to read my diagnostic code's again so we negotiated a lower cost. The dealer downloaded the software fix for $20 and now no codes, problem apparently fixed. I have 3 weeks and 500-600 miles on the car since with no problems.
Thanks Mathew's Volvo People! :D

Outstanding. Thanks for getting back to us! And good work in making the dealer treat you like he should, not like he wanted to.
