S40D 2002 LOSING POWER

My 2002 S40 1.9D has started to lose power whil moving. Starts ok. Engine revs ok and seems to run ok then suddenly shudders and loses power momentarily then regains powers. At the same time there is a buzzing sort of noise coming from under the bonnet. Any ideas what is wrong? It did this yesterday about ten times on a five mile run. I thought I could smell burning too.

Two things spring to mind, dirty air filter or dirty fuel.

I meant to add it has just had a full service in October.

Well they were the first two things.

When the vehicle was serviced was the crankcase ventilation system cleaned out? If that is blocked, or partially blocked, you will lose power and may hear a whistling or buzzing noise.

You were right Bill, it was on the ventillation system. An air intake pipe behind the engine and out of sight had come off. Thanks for your help.
