Alternator Is Putting Out 30 Amps According To Autozone Guy

Post by tolian2 »

1997 854 2.4T 194.3K miles automatic

What is the reason for that?
Do I basically need to get a new/rebuit unit (100 Amps) from bosch?

I could see if I can get one from the JY, but the mileage will be comparable, or eBay, probably.

What do you, guys, think?

Alternators just die after a while, just kinda a fact of life, and that one sounds like its gone. Winter is especially hard on them. Is it whining a lot?

I'd look into getting a new or rebuilt one and save yourself the effort of having to replace it again if you get a used one.

When's the last time you changed your serpentine belt? Might add that to the list too while you've got it loose:mrgreen:

this car is new to me. I'm just starting to sort out the issues.
PO did not indicate, he changed the alternator. it says Volvo on it; I'm assuming it's an original one.
Belt will be done soon, along with the t-belt.

volvo 850 alternator's output are to be tested under load at 2000 rpm with lights on, rear window defroster on, and fan on high.

do a voltage drop test on the the pos wire bet. alt and battery under load also. normal result less than 0.2 volts at 2000 rpm.
not uncommon to have bad starter cable: gets hot by battery. the battery posts need to be cleaned with steel wool or a post tool.

there is a link on this site to voltage drop testing....
