bought the car on ebay to justify a trip to NYC 5 years ago
had intermittent front brake issues every since
parked the car on rainy days and every winter and drove my 850 wagon
ive had volvo certified mechanic look and try to fix the problem in the past with no resolution
decided to resolve the issue myself
ordered parts from Foreign car parts
new calipers, new rotors, pads, flexible line
received wrong size of rotors with studs pressed in
received girling calipers, needed bendix
took the rotors i took off the car to parts store
the ones on the car turned out to be from 84 to 87 740 w abs
so i got the parts to fit that vehicle, the rotor is a bit smaller than the one called for, but matches the one i want to replace
the rotor i took off the vehicle had the abs gear, the bearings and studs all together
looks like the ebay seller replaced the front rotors with the earlier model and would explain why i was having issues all along , im speculating that the stock 88 760 abs sensor unit wasnt reading the abs gear from the earlier model correctly and thats why i was having problems,
question is the spindle the same size, on the earlier 740 and the 88 760
it must be it fits well, but i want to replace the bearings now too,
foreign car parts says they cannot order the bearing with abs assembly anybody run into this problem, Groton says i would have to have the dealer take the old abs gear off my existing rotor and put it on the newer rotor, since that is the wrong gear anyway im going to unhook the abs unit altogether, will the hub and bearing assembly without the abs ring for the 88 760 fit into the smaller rotors, i guess im asking is the spindle the same size, im perplexed and tired of buying and returning parts, the only thing i have now is a rotor that fits, i have the hub assembly and studs that fit but i want to replace the bearings at this point
front brakes 1988 760 turbo sedan w abs
i want to know if the spindles on the 84 thru 87 740 are the same as the spindles on an 88 760. i would love to, but apparently cannot buy a hub and bearing assembly with the abs gear attached for my 1988 760 turbo sedan, which would return the vehicle to its original state, with new parts. my car as is needs new front wheel bearings.

arble, I was slow getting to this as I was trying to work out the answer to your question which needed some research across both models. It would appear that the bearings are the same. Having said that, as with all advice given on this forum, the final decision to go ahead is yours.

thanks bill,
ive ordered the bearing and hub assembly from fcpgroton for the 1988 760, turns out the front calipers on the car were from a 1992 940, the car had 10 1/4 inch rotors on it, so the calipers and brake pads never fit on the rotor properly,
now i have 3 new sets of brake pads, a new set of 10 1/4 inch rotors a new set of 11.25 rotors neither which work on the car as it currently sits, new single piston calipers from a 1992 940. I returned a set of dual piston calipers because they had threaded openings for dual front brake lines. my car has only one brake line going to the front calipers.
is there a caliper bracket for for this caliper that i can purchase that will allow me to use this caliper on either of those rotors?
if i am able to determine what is the original set up and order the proper calipers, i will also need to know which bracket fits the calipers. The way things are now, with my luck neither set of brackets that i have will work on the oem setup and ill be looking for oem brackets as most places that sell calipers expect you to use the brackets already on the car
i have two caliper brackets both of which i have tried with the 2 rotors, one combination comes very close with the 11.25 inch rotor. but as they say in america close only counts in horshoes and hand grenades.
the guy in NYC did some things to the car with the front brakes that were not kosher, and didnt tell me about it. ive tried to replace the parts that were on the car. I had one volvo certified mechanic throw up his arms and give up. Now i see why. ive had the motor rebuilt and ive grown attached to the vehicle. its a beast but its a great vehicle for what i do for a living. I just want the front brakes to work properly, originally i wanted to return it to its original oem configuration, now with the way things are im not sure what size the rotors are supposed to be or what kind of calipers were originally on the vehicle, so i am going to post the vin and maybe that will help someone determine exactly what parts i need to buy and help put this exacerbation behind me once and for all.
the part numbers on the brackets i have are
cn6 1554/1 2020
cn4 1554/1 1052
my vin number is yv1ga8743j0055413
any help will be greatly appreciated

Are these 92 940 calipers single piston? if so then you would need the rotors that are 11 inch diameter. These 11 inch rotors are about 1 inch thick. These 11 inch rotors with the single piston calipers would be considered heavy duty.

Living in the UK I don't know your suppliers too well but I have read very good reports about all of our sponsors. However, the one that stands out for intimate knowledge of Volvos is Erie Vo-Vo.
Possibly a phone call to them will work faster as I can't find those numbers in VADIS and think that is the manufacturer's number as opposed to the Volvo number.
I agree with lummert about the discs (rotors).

Quixote, This project has many turns, To fix a simple problem. Then this and that. I"ve replaced front struts, lines, rotors, calipers, pads, Ive had the front aligned 3 times. I've put 12 thousand miles on a rebuilt motor over 4 years. The brakes..............the right side is fine. I did not have OEM calipers or mounting brackets. The calipers and brackets I got from Erie VoVo were OEM. I paid 90 bucks for them. The calipers were no good but I wanted the brackets. I ordered rebuilt calipers from CARQUEST and used the Erie VoVo ones for the core.........................Here is the deception..................Erie Vo Vo used calipers are guaranteed for life............................The right side is fine but the drivers side I cannot bolt up. There is a problem
