740 turbo 1988 smoking engine

Post by wyoben »

I had a chance to buy a 1988 740 v0lvo turbo...it's smoking bad upon inspection,I noticed the flame trap ventilation system was tampered with I have worked on these turbo pcv systems and understand there is actually no flame trap, but a straight thru system ...what I noticed was the larger hose going to the air inlet to turbo disconnected...the smaller vacuum hose from intake disconnected...so basically instead of sucking the blowby back into the the engine its spewing into atmosphere...my question is would there be quite a bi of blowby and if the system was sucking and functioning correctly would this problem be resolved...the car has 200,000 miles on it and seems to otherwise run good I have not pulled plugs to examine any tips ...P.S still looking for someone to answer my question on what model volvo 16 inch rims will work on the 740/940 cars also heard some other model/make wheels will work ,like ford aerostar etc...any tips on that

The wheels on my 1990 740 Turbo should fit yours if you have a 5 lug bolt pattern. As far as the smoking goes it sounds like reattaching the lines and replacing the flame trap should fix this.

As you said in your first post, the turbo doesn't have a flame trap. The crankcase gases are recycled through the turbo.

Where was it 'smoking bad', PCV hoses or exhaust?

youre right I forgot that I already learned that lesson , the car is gone now but I think it was a pvc hose routing error on the owners part causing the blowby to be released , thanks to all for the help...I still need a good cheap set of 16 wheels for my 940...real cheap, when I consider in the shipping let me know, they dont have to be real fancy
