1998 S70, Aftermarket wheels: w/o alignment hole. Safety?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

1998 S70, Aftermarket wheels: w/o alignment hole. Safety?

Post by ADK46R »

Just got a set of alloy wheels with snows for my 1998 S70. When I went to mount them I discovered the alignment pin in the stock wheel hubs. The new alloys don't have the "extra" hole in them to match up with the pin. It seems that the purpose of this pin is to keep the stud hole lined up when a wheel is removed. After some experimentation, I removed the alignment pin in the stock wheel hubs, carefully keeping the stud holes lined up, and then mounted the new alloy wheel. All seems OK but is there any safety issue that's involved with removal of this pin?

No, it's just there to line everything up to make it easier to install the wheel, as you have discovered. If you have room behind the wheel in that area, you can install a conventional bolt in place of the stud to hold the disc in alignment with the hub.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but being new to Volvo, I just wanted to make sure.
