Beware of drunk bicyclists

Post by matthew1 »

My 850 got a long scar, and a bicyclist almost went to the hospital, last night after work.

My fiance picked me up from work in my 850, and cresting a hill under a green streetlight I noticed a cyclist coming the opposite way begin to make a wide, sweeping turn into us.

I think when you see something like that happen, your mind tries to rationalize it, and you come up with a whole bunch of alternatives to what's really happening like "he's Lance Armstrong and he's timed it so he'll pass by us before he meets the side of our car" or "he's just swerving back and forth playfully and will soon change direction."

But alas, reality was upon us and he slammed into the left rear panel of my 850, making that whomp-ish sheetmetal sound when it gets pushed in.

He fell of course and we pulled over right after the intersection to see how he was. He got up and appeared to be fine, if a bit drunk. For a second it looked like he was going to ride off and that of course freaked me out so I called the police and they came after about 5-10 minutes.

During that time the cyclist apoligized several times, and inidcated he'd been at the Five Point bar, a place not foreign to my fiance and me. He was actually very forthcoming about the whole matter, and obviously not of middle class wealth, so when the cops came we let the whole matter drop, and they let him go on his way.

My 850 has a scar from the fuel door to the tail lamp from his bike's handlebar. The paint is scratched off and the gouge is actually a cm or two deep at its zenith. I'm happy nobody got hurt. I thought he was going to have some injuries. Even his bike escaped major damage.

Now for the insurance company dealings...

Sorry to hear about the accident Matthew, but glad no one was hurt.
A similar incident happened to my wife where a cyclist was riding on a bike path beside the road and then he suddenly turned and rode across the roadway. My wife saw him coming and got the car fully stopped but the cyclist kept coming and ran right into the front right fender of our stopped car, he went sailing across the hood and ended up on the road to the left of the car. He was not hurt but there was a dent on the right fender and scratches across the hood.

By the way, nothing against cyclists in general. I think it's super to not drive your car, and my 850 often sits for 4 days in a row... I take the bus to work.

I'm looking forward to widespread adoption of technology like the Segway, and I don't think it/they will be a substitute for walking as much as it will be a substitute for driving your car.

As Dean Kamen said, it "makes no sense at all for people in cities to use a 4,000-pound piece of metal to haul their 150-pound asses around town."
