you mentioned a new head gasket...
It can run ~ok~ with the timing off, but it'll throw that code.
I would make sure the timing perfect before throwing a new solenoid at it.

Good catch larryh. :!:

The timing belt would have been removed with a head gasket replacement and, were it installed back one tooth off, that could account for the code.

thanks larryh. would the timing being off account for the occasional surging idle and occasional hard start? because it is an occasional condition I was thinking a failing sensor. I am getting only code p0014 timing over advance error. but the symptoms seem like a coolant temp sensor issue.

How does the car otherwise run? If the timing belt was actually a tooth off it would idle poorly and lack top end power.

It runs good. smooth idle, good acceleration. except when it decides to act up. then surging idle, sometimes a gas smell, hard start. this can sometimes be remedied by turning ignition off and then restarting. I had ordered cvvt and coolant temp sensor before I read the post from Larry H. My Plans are to have a real good look at the timing marks hopefully tomorrow. Do I need to manually turn the engine with a breaker bar to see if they line up? do I need to remove the wheel to have a proper look? If that checks out I will install the temp sensor and have a test drive. If there are are no further codes I will not install the cvvt. I do not have the know-how to test the one that is on the car. BTW... my local Volvo dealer parts department wanted $330 for the cvvt. and didnt have it in stock. Mark at myvolvopartsonline was very helpful, had the part in stock(blue box Genuine Volvo) $89. It shipped from California to Ohio in 48 hrs for $8. OUTSTANDING. :D

Those symptoms sound much like what I have read for a failing ETM. Has yours been replaced?

Your code definitely pointed to the CVVT valve but you may have more than one thing going on. Since the car runs good when the car runs good - so to speak - your timing is fine.

I dont know if it has been replaced. I assume Volvo can tell me with my v.i.n. I have just started poking around Don's etm room. I have a feeling I am beyond the 10 yr limit for the recall. My v70 is a 2000 but I believe it was manufactured in 1999.
I hope its not my etm, sounds like an expensive P.I.A.

update. I was away for the holidays, but am home now and have replaced the coolant temp sensor and the cvvt. I have only driven a few miles but symptoms appear to be gone and CEL is off. too soon to call it but so far so good. will post any changes. thanks to all. :D

Sounds like you might have a failing ETM to me. Look for a yellow sticker on top of the module to see if it has been replaced; otherwise, you could contact Volvo about the warranty, but it's probably up now. You could try cleaning the throttle body too, but I'm not sure if it would help you.

Is your CEL code back again for the timing over-advance, or is something different this time?
