Hello, BOTH sockets are broken? Pardon me for asking for a more detailed description. Is the rest of the rear hatch/door broken or smashed-up? It's real easy to bend the little contacts which "wedge" base bulbs fit into. If you did that, as I once did, you'd be fair in describing them as broken. If that's the case, carefully reopen the contacts. Also, the old 193 (3 watt) and 194 (4 watt) bulbs are very similar in appearance to the newer 5 watt bulbs. The 5 watt bulbs' base is thicker. 193s and 194s might light up but they'll move resulting in on and off flashing-very frustrating. It could make you conclude that the sockets are broken. Another frustrating thing is that there are several numbers for the license plate bulb. 5W5 is the one "I think" should be adopted. There's a different number in both the Saab and Volvo owner's manuals as well as at least 4 more cryptic numbers on the bulb's blister packs. Let us know what you learn. Kira

Both sockets are part of a single harness within the tailgate. I just ordered a replacement for my 01 V70 because one of the socket clips on mine were broken. When you go to the Volvo dealer be sure to take your VIN # with you because there are two different versions of that harness and it costs between $140-170 depending on which one yours will need.
Once I get mine and have the time to install it I will take pictures of the process to replace it on here.
