Engine light still on

I have a s40 (2003) with 87k - I changed oil regularly and have done maintenance per the dealer. My engine light went on -dealer changed the variable value timing solenoid but engine light is still on. Now they want to open up the engine to see if there is sludge build up. Is this just a cash grab attempt. Your comments would be appreciated
