Get a small digital meter that fits into the cigarette lighter. I use one on my '88 740 & it works great.

A normal 12 volt battery will indicate a voltage of between 11.5 and 13.5 volts when the engine is not running, with the engine running the voltage measured at the battery should be between 14 volts and 14.8 volts. This will give you a rough indication if your alternator is working.

A more accurate test requires special equipment that will load the charging circuit and test the maximum output of the alternator in amps, any repair facility can offer this test.

On a VOLVO battery.....engine not running.....a normal working battery voltage should be around 12-12.7 volts.

When enging is running, your charging voltage at the batter should be from 13.5-14.5 volts.
