dcarlson12 here.
I just used a piece of 1/4 square brass key stock which was about 10" long. Just needs to be long enough so you can hold it while hitting it. I used a urethane (sand? filled) mallet which transfers inertia with less shock than a metal hammer. It was enough to 'break' the axle loose and move it back the 10 to 20 mm. I don't recall how I did it but I do remember that I had to hold the axle in the 'knocked back' position in order for me to get the socket onto the hub retaining bolts.
Seems there is enough axial 'play' to move the axle back the 10 to 20 mm without doing any damage to the axle or any axle seal(s).
If I recall correctly, it looked almost like there was some anti seize on the spline of the axle/hub. Looke almost like rust color so not sure, maybe it was just light rust.

Finally I was wondering what that front noise in my S80 was, is like all the others describe, like a rough thread tire or kind of like a 4x4 truck tire sound. My recently started doing this, aside from that I notice my inner cv boots are torn. So I'm planning to change both axles and spindles. Keep posting this great fixes.

Hi this is awesome. I'm about to do this to my car, now are the instructions the same for a T6? and also, I'm buying the parts from ebay and noticed that some say visco clutch. Will I need that? I'm doing the spindle bearings as well, cause there is a whoo whoo type sound when I get going. The cv axles got the inner boot torn. So that's why I'm going all out with this repair. Thanks

The inner race appears to be splined. Is this the reason that the bearing can't just be pulled, and a new one presed in? The bearing just isn't available from FAG (or Timken, NTN... etc...) alone? Or is it actually cast in the hub itself?
I ask, because one of mine is obviously going out, and my only experiences with wheel bearings, are with tapered bearings that are packed with grease.
Thanks.

I'm placing my order and found pretty good deals on ebay. Now, where I'm confused is the axle shafts, it seems a lot of volvos share the same, is that the case with the S80 T6? What other model volvo axles fit?

A guy who owns the same car as I do, said that if you jack the car up, and you can wiggle the wheel (camber-wise) then it's a bad wheel bearing. Is this true? My car seems to be making the same noise as all of the other people's on here, but I couldn't move any of the wheels like that.
The growl gets higher pitched as speed increases. By the time I hit 60, my car sounds like a Nascar engine at 7k rpm.

Would the driveshaft be making this noise? I know it's on the right side, because as I make right-handed turns, the noise gets quieter.

Mine was the right side as well. I replaced both sides so the noise totally went away.

Had it checked out... yep, front right bearing is bad. They said they could do the work for me, which broke down to this:

$324 for the bearing
$62 for labor

You read that right.

I just found a brand new one on ebay for $82.50 shipped. My friend has a complete garage setup, so I think I'll keep the other $303.50 for myself (and maybe buy my friend a beer for letting me use his garage  )

Thanks again for the step-by-step! Saved me over 300 bucks!

I used this procedure to get to my control arms, and it worked great. I wish I had started here instead of with my mechanic neighbor. He was convinced I needed to compress the strut springs before starting... what a pain.
Anyway, I got it apart, replaced the control arm bushings and now I am reassembling.
I have an issue on the drivers side.
It seems the CV joint/axle does not want to slide back in enough to get the strut bolted to the spindle.
Also, can you tell me the right torque for the control arm mounting bolts?

Please advise... Thanks.

I found the answer to both questions. I removed the strut and was able to get the cv joint lined up.
