960 SW 1997 leaked parts identication help !!

Post by diyer97 »

I noticed traces of oil on these two places recently:
1. area surrounding the oil filter. It didn't look like it came from the top
part of engine. If it's the oil filter housing how is it fixed?
2. The second place is on the south-west corner (of the top engine) -when you view the top part of engine like an imaginary rectangle, from inside the car -before the fuel injection wiring going to the fuel injection head some of wiring split from the harness and going to this part. I have asked my mechanic and he said something like distributor but I recalled someone on this site said that there is no distributoron my specific year made volvo. I'd like to be an informed customer if I need to have it fixed by my mechanic.
Thanks again to all who shared info so that I could fixed my driver lock problem and replaced my S-belt. You guys made my life easier.

1. There are two things can cause a leak at the oil filter housing: a) it hasn't been tightened enough or b) the rubber sealing ring on the filter wasn't oiled before it was fitted.

2. I've never thought of using North, South etc for locating parts on a car.
Your car doesn't have a distributor but it does have two ignition power units which are bolted to the intake manifold. The only thing I can think of in the area you describe is a test output for ignition coil #1. This unit is mounted on the rear of the engine and has two wires going to it.

Thank you, billofdurham!
My knowledge of engine parts is 10 out of 1001 thefore was my un-concised,clumsy description. However I think you got the point and I do now too. My other question if you'd kindly answer is that I can simply buy the part and replace it or I should leave it to the pro.?
Peace,
sorry I forget..the question is about ignition output#1 ..

I would suspect that this is a dealer part as I can't find it on any of our sponsors' sites.

What exactly is wrong with it? Looking at the only diagram I have for it the two wires leave the wiring harness some distance from the unit. If the insulation is intact on these wires you don't need to replace the unit. If you want to protect the wires you can tape them.

All I can see that is wrong with the wiring is the outer covering. If the copper wires are exposed then you will need to either replace the unit or splice in new wires. If the copper wires aren't exposed you could quite safely put insulating tape around the outer covering or, if you want to do a more professional job, you could buy some split wire loom as shown in this link.

This type of covering is available at parts stores or home electrical parts outlets and is reasonably priced. If you do use this you need two cable ties to hold it in place.
