Ok so now I think I know more about why I keep getting these codes. But I do not know the solution.
Cause: Starting from the beginning, I purchased a 2000 v70XC with a blown engine and burnt up passenger compartment. I must be some kind of masochist. Then I purchased a donar car a 1999 V70XC.
To get arround the security I traded all of the electronics as well. This worked except for this transmission problem. Both computers, immobilizer, instrument cluster, throttle body, ignition switch and exciter ring.
What appears to be the difference is that the 99 while it does have a 4 speed automatic transmission, it lets the driver select L2, L3, D. The 2000 allowes the driver to select any of the four gears.
My problem seems to occur any time I try to select L1. Now the simple solution would be to never select L1. Easy enough right no I have three teenage boys and a wife that drive this car.
The nearest volvo dealer is 150 miles away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Code 0705A and P1618

Hello , NOBODY has ever done what you've done with these two cars. If you've placed the 2000's transmission and gear selector hardware into the 1999 body as well as "all the electronics" then maybe the dealer's fancy computer is the only recourse you have. The 2000 trans. has a detent for first gear; and you even have the little window which says "L1". Could there be a communications problem between the transmission and the ABS unit? It seems the ABS unit is the corpus colosum in these cars. The traction control system has a little brain too, no? Did you identify the two codes? Are there symptoms, or just a check engine light? You need to clear codes immediately as you "trial and error" your way through the home stretch. You say there are no codes until someone attempts to put it into "L1"? Put a stop on the travel of the gear selector lever if it keeps you trouble free. You could document what you've done and send it to every company which deals with Volvo. Someone might refer your highly impressive story to an electronics person who knows. Please let us know what you do. With total respect and admiration, Kira

To the best of my ability I have identified these two codes. The P1618 is a code that tells you the the ECU is having a problem communicating with one of the other computers. The code 0705A indicates that there is a problem with the gear selector switch.
As soon as the code appears I do have driveability problems. The car starts out in 4th and will not shift. So naturally the clutchs must slip a bunch for the car to start moving. Not good for the tranny.
Now I did not think about the computer for the ABS I probably grab and swap that one out as well. Since I am noticing my traction control light comming on at strange times. IE dry pavement.
I have thought about putting in a detent to keep the driver from shifting into low 1. I may end up doing that.
Thanks
