Third row seat will not retract

Post by buncotools »

This is a 1995 850 wagon, the third row seat was engaged
when I bought the car, the little latch behind the headrest
does nothing and the 3rd row seat doesn't even appear in
the manual! Any help?

That latch can go bad. Can you get your hand behind the seat? There is a bar that comes out of the third row seat and connects it to the second row seat. If you can give that bar a push (toward the driver side of the car) it should release the seat.

For posterity sake, I thought I would update this thread. I just bought a 96 850 GLT Wagon, and it had the third row up. When I tried to put it down, I also found out that the latch did nothing. I could get my hand back there and feel the bar. If you can't reach back there, fold down the left seat (2nd row). Pushing on the bar did nothing for me, but turning it did the trick. I think I turned it clockwise--I should have paid more careful attention, but try it both ways. If that doesn't work for you, try folding the right side 2nd row seat down while pulling back on the third row. This is actually how I initially got it down. After I got it down, I realized that the bar needed to be turned to be released. Hopefully that makes sense and this can help somebody in the future.
