In process of replacing fuel pressure regulator, have taken existing one out and am picking up new one from Carquest tomorrow ($96). Noticed a tear in rubber elbow, don't know if it was me trying to get clamp off or if tear had been there beforehand. Do I have to get an new rubber elbow, I have read in previous posts, this is not easy part to find, or can I cut off damaged part of elbow and then secure it to new regulator? Car has not started for a few days now, hoping this is the right fix!

I assume you are talking about the elbow at the end of the intake manifold - that is the usual suspect. Push comes to shove you can fashion a piece of vacuum line and get things hooked back up but space is tight there.

P1072 - which is nearly always a vacuum leak - should not keep the car from running however.

Car has had starting problem for a while now, not every time, but often it would take a few tries to get going, pressing on the accelerator felt like no gas was getting through. Pressure regulator seemed like a likely suspect and easy to replace. Will go and see if there are any more codes and report back. Could it be a Fuel Pump problem? Replaced PCV recently and MAF sensor recently and did not solve starting issues.

It very well could be a fuel pump or fuel pump relay problem. The bad news there is that it often doesn't set a code. You can more or less eliminate the relay by shorting the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the fuel pump relay with a paper clip of a jumper wire. If it starts and runs OK then that was your problem and you can either repair or replace the relay. To test the pump itself you need to get a fuel pressure gauge.

Any codes that you pull will be helpful.

Thanks Lee, I will try that test in the morning after putting the fuel pressure regulator back together, should I put the new regulator in or save my money? The regulator seemed like nothing was wrong, the rubber gasket showed no sign of distress. I pulled codes again and the same one came up, P1072. Thanks for your help.

Put the new regulator on this morning, took off fuel pump relay and tried to jump with paper clip, no start. Checked battery and it read, 11.7. All lights work inside the car and headlights work, tried to jump battery with my truck and it still would not turn over. I am thinking the battery is not giving enough power to turn over. There is a humming noise from the front of the car that lasts about 10 seconds after trying to start car.

The humming noise is coming from the throttle body area and lasts for about 15 seconds and then there is a 'click'.

Put battery charger on this morning and got voltage up to 12.6, will not start, have tried to jump the fuel pump relay, but still no start with full charge, looked at spark plugs and they are light grey/silver color and depressed the valve at end of fuel rail and no fuel comes out. I think I am jumping the relay correctly, pins 15 and 87 with a paper clip, but no luck.

Thanks for the reply, I hear nothing in the trunk when key is in position II. Will look into information on pump replacement and start that process.
