Because the torque convertor holds about half the fluid, you are not changing the whole ammount when you drain the sump and re-fill,the best way to achieve a complette change is by flushing with new fluid. This is the best way to do it:-1st,drain the sump, replace sump plug and put back the exact amount of new fluid.Disconnect the return pipe from the cooler and connect a flexible pipe to the cooler out put,and a suitable container,if you're not sure which is the return, you should be able to blow through the pipe that you have disconected, this will blow any fluid back in the box.Now run the engine in park, you will see fluid discharging into the container, you should be able to get about 2 ltrs.,out before it stops, switch off and put back the same ammount of clean fluid.Repeat this untill you get new fluid out of the the flexi, you have now changed all the fluid & flushed the cooler as well.ALLWAYS remember to replace what you take out. :D :D

A drain and fill involves removing the trans drain plug, draing the ATF out, refilling it, driving, and repeating the process until you get pink ATF on your dip stick or until you feel you have removed almost all of the old ATF. A flush involves hooking up the trans to a machine that forces ATF through the transmission and then back out. There are quite a few threads on this forum discussing flushing vs drain & fill. Here's the link for the drain and fill: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... f=1&t=8767

polskamaffia mjl Great Link, exactly the right way to do it imho. Its more expensive than just a drain, but a job worth doing, but only if the TMF is burnt or browny black.
