I'd definitely try a new dimmer switch before diving any further into the dash. May as well pull the lighting relay too if you're heading to a junkyard.

The loose wire sounds like a likely suspect to me - when I connected the radio in my Saab directly to the open battery wire rather than the one controlled by the ignition, it began to do strange things. Like walking around yelling at people that the football was in the inzone O.o

Well, there is a wire in the stock harness for the dash lights that is not connected to anything now that you have installed a different radio. My question is, where is this wire connected to now? ... I would remove the radio and ensure that all unused wires are properly taped up to prevent them touching anything and shorting out. The dimmer switch would sense this and cut the power due to overload when shorted.

This all seems really odd, maybe you just have a bad connection somewhere that finally went.
Like my blower motor before I replaced it,
The connection just eventually gave completely so it faded on and off till it just never turned back on.
