Seat belts are stuck!

Post by Flebes »

I just purchased a third row seat to install in my 91 740 wagon and am having a problem with the seatbelts - they do not seem to want to unwind. No matter how hard or soft or from what angle, I can not get them to pull out. Any suggestions? thanks.

Are the seat belts mounted? The angle is extremely critical and even being a fraction off will lock the belt and prevent it from being extended. Volvo seat belts are known for poor retraction when they age with the only reliable fix being to replace the belts, but not extending is usually just improper mounting angle.

Good luck

No I have not mounted them yet - installing the seat is one of my weekend projects. Thanks for the advice.

if the are not unwinded, then you will have a hard time mounting them inside the compartments.

What you need to do is put them on a vise.....perfectly straight upright....then gently pull out the belt. Once the belt is pulled out....then you can mount them easier.

Installed!! It was a matter of the angle. Once I saw how they are mounted, I tugged gently and they came right up. But I ended up being two bolts short. The two bolts to anchor the "lose" end of the belts were missing so I will need to purchase these from Volvo (probably for about $5) and I will be finished!!
