Limp home mode on new ETM... MAF?

Post by daddysvolvobus »

Hello again

Just put in my new ETM three weeks ago...started the car today just fine but when I started out it wouldn't allow the rpm's to go over 1500...and would barely move...
i pulled over in the driveway and turned it off, waited 5 minutes and it started to run fine again...check engine light came on.

So When I pulled over after 15 miles I pulled the plug on the MAF, sure enough it dropped in idle for a split second then came back up and kept running. Is it a sure sign of a bad MAF>???

That car does NOT like you lately, does it?!

I've heard it's bad to pull the plug on the MAF when the car is running (but I did the same thing).

You can leave the MAF unplugged and go to get the code checked. Just go easy on the gas pedal, or it will shoot black smoke like a diesel. If that's the only code in the system, then it is probably the MAF sensor.

I got the Code P0237 Turbo/Super boost sensor...as soon as I had it checked the engine light turned off and its running fine again...

However, when I first started it to go get the code checked I had the idle jump several times "staccato" until it evened out at 950rpms...
As I have read Matthew1's post in Dons etm room about signs of a failing MAF it still sounds like its the MAF not some turbo sensor! Any ideas would be great...the bill for this car is getting ridiculous!

I was going to say that the not going over 1500 rpms sounded like a turbo issue to me. Usually a frozen intercooler or sucked-shut hose, but a stuck shut wastegate would definitely do it too. You may want to check your vacuum lines there if the issue re-occurs.

The idle issues still sounds like a MAF to me too though. Did you try cleaning it?

At this point, you've spent so much on those few things you did to it that you'd only be taking a loss if you were to sell it. Unfortunately, KBB values don't incorporate what new parts have been installed.

I hear you there, I haven't really been able to drive mine much for the past 2 months...one thing or another keeps breaking every time I go back to NC to the point where I'm uncomfortable driving 3 hours on the highway in it, and I keep ending up having to borrow one of my parents cars.

I know the sensor on a 99 is different, but the basic process is the same. Pick up a can of MAF cleaner and spray the inside of the sensor, don't touch anything. Let the sensor sit unbolted for an hour or two and reconnect it and see how it runs.

Cleaned the MAF using CRC cleaner and it starts and runs fine...for now.

We will see if that will stop it from going into limp mode again.

Bad ETM seems to screw the MAF, certainly did on mine. Needed replacing after about a month. Different symptoms though, non turbo, cleaning did keep it going for a bit though.
