Brake Pads

Post by turbotim2 »

I had to change out the rear brake pads on one of the 850's. My past experience told me that pretty much anything other then OEM will squeal like crazy. I picked up some OEM Volvo pads, opened the box only to find the OEM pads are now made in India. The worn OEM set I removed from the car were made in Denmark. I am interested to compare the quality, time will tell I guess.

Interesting I've had non OEM pads, since I got my 850 last July, not a squeek from them. I'm finding, as I drive with hand controls the discs are wearing quicker. In their defense the Discs were not replaced when the pads were. Will be replacing both Discs and pads on the front over the weekend.

Bought some OEM ones from FCP several years ago that were made in India. Still going strong. No squeaks.

There are a few aftermarket pads that don't squeal, I don't know which ones they are. OEM always used to be a sure fire way to prevent it.

Ive installed two sets of cheap aftermarket pads on my 850 since purchasing it, neither squeaked.

Have heard that alot of people have issues with it though, maybe it's because I installed cheap rotors at the same time :)

I have actually had good luck with Mintex pads. It is critical that the rears be shimmed and greased on the back of the pads and the shims. I use Sil-Glyde brake grease on mine.

They are cleaner than OEM but they are still dirty as far as brake dust on the wheels.

lee...... exactly what part do you shim? the pad? where do i get these shims. I've heard of shimming pads for years, but never ran into it as a problem.
